Synopsis:
A ferry filled with crewmen from the
USS Nimitz and their families was blown up in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. BATF
Doug Carlin is brought in to assist in the massive investigation, and gets
attached to an experimental FBI surveillance unit, one that uses spacefolding
technology to directly look back a little over four days into the past. While
tracking down the bomber, Carlin gets an idea in his head: could they use the
device to actually travel back in time and not only prevent the bombing but also
the murder of a local woman whose truck was used in the bombing?
Brian's
Rating: B : This movie cannot quite decide if its a science fiction movie or
not. It actually is, but its as if the writers were embarrassed to admit it so
they tried to mask it in a procedural action flick.
Without spoiling anything, the writers throw in a badly contrived plot element
that is explained horribly. It made my eyes roll that they could write such
junk, and then fortunately the sci-fi explanation was thrown in instead. At
least then I did not have to worry about trying to ground it in reality.
The problem with the whole style of the film is that the rest of it pretends
there is no sci-fi element. I find it hard to believe that a small team of
people "accidentally stumbles" on this amazing tool and the rest of the world is
blissfully unaffected.
Anyway, I get sidetracked, but other than the context of this movie, which I
could not get past, it was entertaining. I don't want to spoil it, but I am a
sucker for the plot element that was used. It always intrigues me. This is
probably not actually a 'B' rated movie, but I tend to over rate the types of
movies that I enjoy most. This is no exception.
I would say to rent this if you like <blank> type of movie, but the problem is
that you cannot know it is <blank> type of movie unless you have the plot
spoiled for you. Catch-22. Make of it as you will.
