There is something to be said about carrying over cinematic legends to your children. As I sit here writing this review, I realize that without somebody, somewhere sitting down with her and suggesting she watch a film such as Cool Hand Luke, she may never have the experience of doing so. Cool Hand Luke lacks special effects, it lacks blockbuster set design as well. What it brings to the screen that many films created today can't do is originality. Cool Hand Luke has an original storyline, one that set the standard for many prison movies to follow. Comradery among inmates had rarely been showcased as it was here.
Newman gave a fantastic performance here and George Kennedy was wonderful as his supporting actor. With an iconic car wash scene that is still incredibly sexy 40+ years later and an ending that (for the time) was extremely controversial, Cool Hand Luke is necessary cinema for any student of the art.
