Synopsis:
The relationships of two couples
become complicated and deceitful when the man from one couple meets the woman of
the other.
Brian's
Rating: A- : People who know me think that I would never like a movie that
is about a love story. Its true that I do not like many of these it is because
they are so darned fake and/or canned.
This one breaks that mold and weaves 2 different love stories in such a way to
show the complexity that love really is. Granted, not all of us are the
superficial, selfish individuals that are portrayed in the film. However, the
underlying complexities show through, the consequences for the way they choose
to fuel their relationships, and at least its accurate to the human condition.
You can tell that this was a play, and I would have loved to see it on stage.
It is hard to rate the adaptation to film without having seen the former, but
from what I saw, it was done very well. Natalie Portman does an excellent job
in breaking way from her Amadalia role, and even Jude Law does well (I don't
normally like him). And of course, Julie Roberts is excellent. Despite all the
bad movies she does, she is a good actress.
The
Freak's Rating: B+ : There is much art to be found in this film.
Many shots are amazingly photographed, the acting is quite nicely done, set
design exquisite and some of the story intertwining is pitch perfect. The
film is solid on a number of levels, but never quite took me to the next level
of deserving an A rating. Don't get me wrong, Natalie Portman as a
stripper says some things on its own :), but it just wasn't enough.
