Synopsis:
Two
best friends become rivals when they schedule
their respective weddings on the same day.
The Freak's
Rating: C- : As I stood outside the
theater, waiting for the previews to end so that
Bride Wars would begin, I decided to give my
wife a call. Her words to me were, "I
can't believe you're going to see Bride Wars.
It's going to be terrible." I'm always
able to separate myself from outside opinions
with film, so I was unaffected.
Surprisingly, I can't say she was completely
correct in her assumption.
Kate
Hudson is past her prime of being an attractive
leading leady. I'll say that again for
anyone in casting to hear, Kate Hudson is past
her prime of being an attractive leading lady.
Hudson was incredibly cute in Almost Famous,
enough to nab some attention and a few leading
roles. Much like Sandra Bullock, Hudson is
continuing to choose roles that should be chosen
by much younger and cuter girls.
Anne
Hathaway is just venturing into adult roles,
having adequate performances in Get Smart
and The Princess Diaries' franchise as well as
recently gaining recognition for her turn in
Rachel Getting Married. Hathaway shines as
the adorable Emma opposite Hudson's Liv.
Emma is sweet, caring and full of everything
you'd want your daughter to be. Liv is
uptight, pushy and everything you want your
daughter not to be. I suppose we are meant
to feel that opposites have attracted to bring
these girls together, but the friendship just
barely skates by as logical. Comic relief
is provided by Kristen Johnston (of TV's Third
Rock From The Sun), but in quite annoying
fashion, getting scarcely a chuckle out of the
audience I was in.
Bride
Wars has a few laughs and solidifies Hathaway as
a sexy leading lady who can carry a film (see
her stripper scene for those who doubt).
Teenage girls and women over 40 are the target
demographic for the film. Such an audience
will receive enough chuckles that they may not
chalk it up as a complete waste of time, but
without Hathaway it sinks like a stone.
