 Synopsis:
Have you ever watched
someone do something
bad, wanting so badly to
grab them by the throat
and choak some sense
into them? Usually at
that moment your
morality kicks in and
tells you that even
though it may be the
"right" thing to do by
convincing them of their
misteps it isn't what
you "should" do, at
least by society's
standards. I think we've
all been in that spot at
some point in our lives.
Now
imagine if somehow you
ignored that feeling
that told you not to
choak them. Imagine even
further if you are a
Christian man and
somehow feel the hand of
God guiding you towards
helping this person see
the error of their ways.
There you have
it...Black Snake Moan. A
Christian message
underneath all of this?
Yup, I didn't think it
would be like that
either.
The Freak's
Rating: A : Samuel L. Jackson stars
in yet another film
showcasing his talents
playing an individual
you don't want mad at
you. He's right up there
with Pacino on my list
of people to keep on the
good side of. He
commands attention when
he raises his voice.
Jackson plays Lazarus, a
Blues musician/farmer in
the VERY DEEP south.
Christina Ricci plays
Rae, a character Ricci
will struggle with
letting her parents see
on screen. Rae is a
small-town girl who has
slept with half the town
and has a sickness.
After a particularly
rough night with a local
guy, Rae is beaten and
left by the side of the
road for dead...enter
the man who owns the
nearest house, Lazarus.
Lazarus
learns of the girls
reputation as he is
nursing her back from
near death and decides
it is his mission to
cure her of her ailment,
specifically the evil
inside her that makes
her promiscuous.
This movie is directed
by Craig Brewer of
Hustle & Flow. Though
some critics have bashed
BSM for not being of the
same level, it exceeded
my expectations and left
me wanting to watch the
characters longer as the
credits rolled. This is
DEFINITELY an adult
movie. Ricci is in her
underwear the bulk of
the film and the
sexualit her character
puts out is unlike
anything I've seen since
the 1950's movie Baby
Doll. This is the kind
of film I want people to
see, but I don't know
that I'm comfortable
watching it with them.
All in all it is
wonderful. The biblical
undertones are
everywhere, you just
have to look. Lazarus is
hebrew for "one God has
helped" and is
biblically significant
of the story of a
resurrection, which
Lazarus is trying to
perform on Rae (derivitive
of Rachel, meaning ewe,
or female sheep -
helpless animal). The
parallels are great, the
film is outstanding. I
added it to my Amazon
wish list minutes after
it was over.
Brian's Rating : B
: An
interesting story. Was a bit slow in the
middle and often I found my self straining to
figure out what the actual motivations of the
characters were. Still, at the end of the
movie, I called it a good movie and worth
watching.
Sebastian's
Rating: B+ : Wanting to see this movie
because it was reccomended to me by the freak, i
raced down to the video store to find the
nearest copy.
After coming home and sitting down on my chair,
and inserting this movie in my dvd player, i
felt that this movie will be one of the best
moivies ive ever seen. It was certainly good,
but could have been better.
Being a christian and all i found this movie to
have good morals. It still to me wasn't right to
take a stranger and chain her up, these days you
just can't do that. Samuel L. Jacksons acting in
this film was actually pretty good. Alot of the
perfomances were memorable, even justin
timberlakes, I would have thought he would ruin
the movie, but near the end he pulled it off
well.
There were also some great scenes in the movie,
like when the Rae is talking to her mother in
the shops, it's a very powerful scene.
The ending was actually pretty good. I won't
spoil it, but like every movie, it ends happily.
I'd give black snake moan an A or atleast an A-,
i don't know if it could be better... it just
wasn't the best movie of all time. However, It
certainly was great.
