Synopsis:
A Disney phenomenon, Miley Cyrus has
infiltrated our pop culture in a way no Disney star has done before. Miley
goes on tour as herself and her alter ego Hannah Montana for a 54 city
tour...and the cameras were rolling the entire time.
The
Freak's Rating:
B- : When something comes along like Hannah Montana and grabs our culture so
strongly, my curiosity can't help to be stirred up. It reminds me of
something Kiefer Sutherland says in
The Lost Boys after someone refuses to eat rice, "how can a billion Chinese
people be wrong?". In the entertainment world, when something has this
much strength, there must be something to it. In the case of Hannah
Montana, there is definitely something definable to its appeal.
I've always sympathized with Cyrus,
growing up with a camera in her face at all moments of her life. The
things she gets in trouble for (cell phone pictures, etc...) are those than any
teenager would do.
Disney no doubt upped the budget for
this tour banking on a nice pull from sales of the DVD, and it shows. The
production value of this concert/film is impressive. Disney filmed many of
the nights of this concert tour and different shots are pieced together,
providing an all-encompassing view of the tour. Backstage shots are
plentiful and intriguing, with Miley giving a personal tour in one of the bonus
features on the disc that takes you inside her work day. Pyrotechnics are
in no short supply, being pumped out nearly every song. Costume changes,
choreography and set design are nicely done as well.
The flaws of the film/concert are
done in post-production and are enormously bad. There are entirely too
many sweeping pans tied together in some points, dizzying the viewer. The
biggest downfall is that there are way too many shots with camera booms and
sometimes cameras themselves within. Whenever you see the cameras, you're
pulled immediately from the world the film attempts to thrust you into.
Much like High School Musical did,
Hannah Montana excels with musical style. A mostly up-tempo set list has
fans jumping and screaming throughout the show and you can't help but tap your
foot every now and then. Can I say I'd never watch it again? Not
really. If I have a daughter later in life, I can't imagine not
encouraging her to watch Disney stuff. It is relatively wholesome.
Anyone who likes Hannah Montana would like this one more than I, but I still had
fun watching it.
