Synopsis:
Apocalypto
is a story of Jaguar Paw. JP is
forced into slavery when his
tribe is run through by a group
of Mayans and spends the bulk of
the film attempting to get back
to his beautiful wife and son(s).
Beheadings, jaguar chases,
prophecizing creepy children
(right Leah?) and violent deaths
highlight the 2 hour and 25
minute running time of a truly
magnificient film.
The Freak's
Rating: A+: Mel Gibson's social views may be
a tad off, but the man really
knows how to make a movie. Jen &
I had our good friends Eric &
Leah over for dinner and a movie
and watched Apocalypto together
on Blu Ray disc.
From the opening moments of this
movie you realize that you are
in for a ride, and a different
one than most of the trash in
the theater nowadays takes you
on.
Apocalypto came into theaters at
the height of Mel Gibson's DUI
rampage against Jews and was
therefore greeted to a lukewarm
reception at the box office. It
is a shame, since Apocalypto
succeeds in every facet of its
attempt to provide cinematic
brilliance. The sweeping
cinematography, extensive makeup
and well choreographed chase
scenes truly bring the film to
life. It is incredibly violent
and definitely not suitable for
younger crowds. There are
moments in Apocalypto where your
heart pounds in anticipation.
You spend about 90% of the film
on the edge of your seat. I know
that sounds cliche, but it is
VERY true with this one.
Apocalypto is a beauty of a film
and I'm glad I was able to
showcase it to friends. A note
for the home theater owners out
there, it is a wonder to listen
to and view and a DEFINITE buy.
Sebastian's
Rating: B+ : not much to say here, it was good although i dont think it
deserves and A from me
Lori's Rating: B+
: I think they did a good job with the movie. I realized I enjoy a
good fight scene if it does not involve women and children. So that part was
hard for me to watch. Scott asked me what I thought about the heart being
ripped out... my response was that there was no way the heart looked ripped the
major vessels were neatly cut (I suppose that is what you get when you ask a
nurse about gore in a movie that is not believable).
Nate's
Rating: A- : I was probably the only person who sat down to watch this
expecting it to be good, and it was. There were a few parts where I caught some
flaw in the special effects that kind of took me out of the experience, and for
some of the actors I had to guess a little at what they were expressing, but
those are minor quibbles. The story is engaging, the characters (good and bad)
are multi-dimensional, and I think the meat of the movie is that it really
brings home the primal jungle terror that existed for people in that situation.
You read about tribal warfare, slavery, and human sacrifice in history books and
it never seems to be a big deal. When you see it on the screen, inflicted upon
characters (albeit fictional) that you've become attached to, it reminds you
what horrors normal people are capable of. I honestly started to think, maybe
their civilization deserved to be wiped out. Which I know is a terrible thought
to have, especially when I remember that no civilization is innocent.
Eric's
Rating: B : I didn't really want to see it at first, but was pleasantly
surprised. Even with the subtitles (which I'm normally not a fan of) I ended up
really liking the characters and I thought it did a good job of putting you in
another time and culture. I can't give it an A because I'm not itching to see it
again for whatever reason but I really did enjoy it.
Brian's Rating: A :
Great movie. Kept Lisa and I entertained. I would have given it an "A" except
for a couple very implausible to impossible sequences in a setting where the
vivid imagery was obviously striving to give a realistic idea of how it may have
been to live at the time with the Mayans. Worth watching for sure.
Jen's Rating: A+
:
I almost gave it an A but then thought about it...what movie would I consider
better than this to give it an A+? I couldn't think of any so A+ it is.
Leah's Rating: A
: I liked this one... Great
story line, character development was there, made me laugh, cry, and freak out.
This story was subtitled- I think it actually enhanced the film. You gotta see
it!
Angie's Rating: A
: This movie is refreshingly different and keeps you "on the edge of your
seat," sorry about the cheesy line I had to use there... it really does. :) I
can't wait to watch it again... definitely worthy of that!
