A Mighty Heart is
the story of Daniel
Pearl, told through
the eyes of his
wife, played
terrifically by
Angelina Jolie.
Daniel, on his way
to an interview with
an elusive
politician, is
kidnapped by a
radical group and
held hostage in
Pakistan. Daniel’s
wife, Mariane, plays
an integral role
along with Pakistani
inspection teams in
attempting to
discover Daniel’s
whereabouts and
bring him home. The
movie follows them
through the
investigation to the
end of the search.
The Freak's
Rating: B : History is sometimes
very difficult to
digest. Not long
ago, the story of
Daniel Pearl was
presented to the
American public. It
was done so in a way
common to extremely
violent tragedies,
as a 15 minute story
thrown in every hour
or two over one or
two days of Fox
News’ schedule. The
ending to the story
also received about
a day’s worth of
coverage.
Occasionally Tony
Snow would pop in
and give the
American people a
screenshot or two of
Daniel Pearl being
held captive. The
irony was that
people were being
beaten in our
schools because they
were of Arab descent
and though we
preached against the
discrimination, here
we were fueling the
fire by showing
images of their
hatred towards us.
Many times Hollywood
personalities have
stories of their
lives take over
their career and
overshadow their
talent. A great
example is
Apocalypto, one of
the best movies of
last year that was
largely overlooked
because of Mel
Gibson’s drunken
rant against Jews,
etc... Around the
time that A Mighty
Heart hit theaters,
the Brad Pitt &
Angelina Jolie drama
hit full swing with
a new baby and
somehow this film
was overlooked by
most. Angelina
was also crucified
for her interviews
she gave during the
press tour for this
film.
The heartbreakingly
honest performance
Angelina gives in
this film is worthy
of a viewing on its
own. A Mighty Heart
is filmed in a way
that you are thrust
into the life of
American journalists
abroad. A Mighty
Heart takes you on
an incredible
emotional struggle
of a woman devoted
to her husband.
There is a scene so
emotional and
gripping by Angelina
that I’d thrust her
near the front of
the line for Best
Actress. Whether or
not she gets a
nomination that is
yet to be seen, but
it is a good film
worthy of a see.
