Synopsis:
A documentary on seniors at a high
school in a small Indiana town and their various cliques.
The Freak's
Rating: A+ :
Documentaries are quite difficult to rate for
some. Who would actually watch this again,
right? With the genre typically being one
of information and not emotion, there is rarely
a time when one comes along that you want to
own, watch again and most importantly share.
I would suggest that American Teen is a near
perfect documentary in every way possible.
My Amazon order containing it is on the way and
I can't wait to watch it again.
Nanette Burstein has had her hand in a couple
films up to this point, but this is really her
coming out party. The shots she gets of
these teenagers are amazing. Teen
heartbreak, joy, fulfillment and angst is
captured perfectly. Coming from a small
town in Illinois, I can relate entirely to the
community aspect of the film, but it is
presented in a way that the community, though
quite intrusive in the film's stage for the kids
to perform on, is a very small piece of the
puzzle. The real gems here are these kids.
Whether you were a jock, a prom queen, a nerd or
someone (as Hannah says "outside it all"), this
is a film you'll be able to relate to. I
forgot how difficult it can be for a teenager,
with pressure coming from every angle all the
while your hormones racing as you become an
adult. This is a fantastic documentary
I've already recommended to many and will
continue to do.
