Rating: B+ : If you are looking for one of those unheralded diamond in the
rough type movies, this fits the bill. I had never heard of it, maybe because
it is an older HBO produced movie before the time that HBO was known for making
good original material.
Right before Samuel L. Jackson was Jules, he made this movie. There is a
special crazy, yet in complete control, look he has in his eyes when he plays
Jules in Pulp Fiction. That same look it prevalent in this role, and it fits
well. He does an excellent job in his role as Jamaal, and really makes the
film.
This is an excellent portrayal of the real events that happened in 1971 at
Attica prison in New York. It was a turbulent time that gives rise to this
setting. The start of the movie reminds you of this in a series of actual news
clippings.
This was an excellent movie, and it would easily receive an A- from me if it was
not for the fact that it is old. In 1994, directors were just beginning to
realize the potential in putting large amounts of effort in using a storyboard
in the preproduction phase of movies. This movie just did not have any really
cool stream of shots that makes it stand out. It is par for the course in
1994. Ignore the plot, and just compare it with some of the shots in Pulp
Fiction, and you will know what I mean. It look like a movie from the late
80's, or early 90's. I suppose that is what is expected, but living in today's
movie age, I have to knock it down a notch for this shortcoming. It cannot help
the time it was made. Yet I am reviewing it now.
Still I would recommend the movie. It easily will fall through the cracks in
most peoples film watching library, and that is too bad. It deserves more
audience.
