The Freak's Rating: B : My way of reviewing films differs from many other critics. Most appreciate it, since I tend to like films in every genre on every level of quality from Oscar Winner to grindhouse flick. I rate movies based upon how successfully they convey their desired message and how entertaining they are to those who would consider watching them. Though I put 2012 in the B category saying that I "might watch it again and will recommend", it doesn't mean I think it belongs in the same category as other features with the same rating. I am saying that I would recommend the film to someone who is considering it. For example, my mother wants pure entertainment. She loves special effects and action. She could care less who the director was (though she should take note of it) or which stars are delivering their lines with gusto. She simply wants to be entertained. She will LOVE this film! For my wife, who wants to be moved by a film rather than simply absorb special effects for two hours, this film would never be recommended.

2012 is long, sporting a running time of 158 minutes. I could name at least 20 minutes of footage that should be removed, but surprisingly the pacing was nicely done and I rarely considered the number of times I switched my seating positions due to the amount of time I'd sat there. Roland Emmerich has brought a number of "world disaster" films to the screen and though most are ridiculous, 2012 skates by with a tad bit of flare. Sure, there are unbelievable moments where heroes can't crash their cars, planes fly under collapsing buildings (see pic above) and just a few to many "you were so close to dying" moments happen, but 2012 hands us a few deaths that are unexpected to even out for the stereotypical dialogue you know you'll hear.

The special effects here are amazing, having moments where you can't help but be on the edge of your seat. Projected on the mega screen at my local theater, I can say with certainty that if this is your type of movie, you should definitely make the effort to see it there before it leaves.

John Cusack and Amanda Peet are borderline laughable with their lines, but watching all the special effects does seem to even out for their shortcomings. . If you want more out of your cinema, skip this film. You'll walk out talking about how it was unrealistic and ridiculous. The fact is that the filmmakers never pretend it to be a film for the person who will leave thinking those things. There is a side to me that wants pure escapism when I sit down with my popcorn, and for that side this film satisfies in the B range. You know already if you want to see this movie and you should know precisely what to expect. If you are considering it and like the type of film, go. You will have a good time at the movies!
